Details About Greg Mortenson's Follow-up to "Three Cups of Tea" Released

When we first invited Greg Mortenson to appear at The Richmond Forum, we knew that he was scheduled to release a follow-up to the best-selling Three Cups of Tea in December, but we didn't know any further details. Now those details are being released.

Stones into Schools
The publisher's description reads:

In this dramatic first-person narrative, Greg Mortenson picks up where "Three Cups of Tea" left off in 2003, recounting his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan; his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake hit the region in 2005; and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders even as he was dodging shootouts with feuding Afghan warlords and surviving an eight-day armed abduction by the Taliban. He shares for the first time his broader vision to promote peace through education and literacy, as well as touching on military matters, Islam, and women-all woven together with the many rich personal stories of the people who have been involved in this remarkable two-decade humanitarian effort.

Three Cups of Tea has been a favorite of Richmond book clubs, especially since it was announced that Mortenson will be addressing The Richmond Forum on January 10th. Stones into Schools is scheduled for release on December 1st, so you'll have a few weeks to read it before The Forum. Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders.

The Richmond Forum Loses a Board Member and True Friend

Henry FineThis morning we were deeply saddened to hear of the death last night of our good friend Henry Fine. Henry was a current member of our board of directors, and in June he assumed the role of our treasurer.

Henry brought his smile, sense of humor, and clarity to every board meeting and his passion for The Richmond Forum was evident to all. He could always be counted on for a well-timed laugh and for razor sharp good sense.

His favorite quote was "In the land of the blind, a one-eyed man is king." Henry was born with one eye.

Henry will be greatly missed by The Richmond Forum family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Karin, Kevin and Allison. And, of course, "Claire the Wonder Dog."

Steve Forbes to President Obama...

Obama health care reformAt this writing, President Obama is addressing health care reform at a town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Yesterday, Steve Forbes used his Intelligent Investing column to discuss his belief in the need for free enterprise in the American health care system to help drive down costs.

"...we must realize that today's hybrid system in not a capitalist one. President Obama, in turn, must realize that his worthy goal of universal health care can only be realized by bringing genuine free enterprise to the system," writes Forbes.

Steve Forbes, Chairman and CEO of Forbes, Inc. and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Magazine and two-time Republican candidate for president, will address The Richmond Forum on March 6, 2010.

"Fresh" screening at The Byrd Theatre on September 24th.

Fresh at the Byrd Theater
If you enjoyed the April Richmond Forum program with Michael Pollan and Marion Nestle, you might want to mark your calendar for this Richmond documentary screening in September. Fresh features Michael Pollan and Virginia farmer Joel Salatin.

There will be a panel discussion following the screening at The Byrd.

According to an email to The Forum from Terrance Jackson, "Fresh also features urban farmer Will Allen, who in 2008 was awarded a $500,000 Genius Grant from the MacArthur Foundation. This event will be used to raise money to allow people from Virginia to attend Mr. Allen's Growing Food and Justice Gathering in Milwaukee."
